New CORDIS article on SCARBOn’s space-based emissions observatory

The article A space-based observatory to monitor climate emissions has just been released in the Results in Brief section of CORDIS, the European Commission’s official source of information on EU-funded research. It focuses on how SCARBOn uses miniaturised sensors on small satellites to help Europe better monitor greenhouse gas emissions and support efforts to reduce them.

The piece explains how SCARBOn is working towards a satellite constellation that can measure carbon dioxide and methane emissions, with a revisit every two days. It describes the progress made on NanoCarb, SCARBOn’s compact spectrometer, which has been upgraded, manufactured and characterised within the project. It also looks ahead to the final phase of the project, which runs until April 2027, including the move towards a space flight model, data processing and compatibility with missions such as Copernicus.
